 Choosing the right size of filter and pump for your particular pond is important. Below you will see a step by step guide to help you make sure you get it right and enjoy years of happy pond keeping. Knowing the volume of your pond is important for everything Only if you know how much water is in your pond do you have the chance to get the selection of equipment right. Measure the width, length and depth of your pond. We suggest using averages for ponds with irregular shapes. We do strongly recommend though that you over estimate rather than underestimate. If you have two ponds interconnected with a stream or waterfall you should measure them both and add the totals together. Doing this will avoid long terms problems associated with inadequate filter size or insufficient water turnover for the volume of the pond. Circular ponds Measure the diameter A and the average depth. Calculate 1/2 A x 1/2 A x 3.14 x average depth x 1000 = Volume litres Example Pond Diameter A is 2.4 metres Average Depth is 0.3 metres 1.2 x 1.2 x 3.14 x 0.3 x 1000 = 1356 litres Rectangular or irregular shaped ponds: Measure the average length A and average width B and the average depth. Calculate A x B x average depth x 1000 = Volume litres Example Pond Length A is 2 metres Pond Width B is 1.2 metres Average Depth is 0.4m 3 x 1.5 x 0.4 x 1000 = 1800 litres Next Step: Determine your type of pond
